Outreach Program

Senior Center Community Services

Heart valve disease mainly affects senior patients. Heart valve replacement is often performed for patients with advanced age - 80+ years old. These patients are among the oldest of the old in our society. Therefore, raising awareness of valve disease and failure in senior citizens is more relevant and urgent than in any other age group.  Thus, partnering with interventional cardiologists, Dr. Wei Sun has initiated an educational seminar series at local Connecticut Senior Centers since 2008. In the seminar, heart valve related topics are covered, such as:

1) an introduction to heart valve disease and prosthetic valve replacement, in particular the minimally invasive valve replacement,
2) the latest imaging diagnostic tools for cardiovascular disease.

Graduate students from Dr. Sun’s lab also participate in the seminars and interact with the seniors to exchange their knowledge and to answer questions.

The first seminar of the series was conducted on July 31st, 2008 at the Manchester Senior Center. The second seminar was conducted at the Norwich Senior Center on Oct 30th, 2008; the third one was conducted at the Glastonbury Senior Center on Feb 9th, 2010; and the forth one was conducted at the Newington Senior and Disabled Center on Aug 19, 2011.

If you are interested in hosting a future seminar, please contact Dr. Sun at weisun@engr.uconn.edu.
